In an interesting expression of stress neurosis (or petulance) in response to Cathie and Erik's CtC-educated filing, the Treasury Dept. has kept back $500 from this refund for a "frivolous return" penalty, even while acknowledging that the return was perfectly proper, and processing it accordingly:

Cathie and Erik have spoken with numerous agency workers, all of whom declare themselves mystified about the original penalty charge. They are even more mystified (they say) about the fact that even though this "penalty" has already been improperly deducted from Erik and Cathie's returned property, someone or something in the agency, so thoroughly slapped around by CtC Warriors by now as to be reaching a state of complete dysfunction, just keeps blustering along:

You just can't help but roll your eyes and shake your head, and wonder what these agency people are going to do when they're eventually forced to find honest work...

Even in the face of the requirements of the law, the junkyard dog is still trying to play its losing hand in a few cases-- particularly where amended returns, in which the filer necessarily disputes his or her own previous testimony, are concerned. Significantly, not once in any of these efforts to discourage or stonewall a proper filing does the government actually challenge or dispute the accuracy of what is revealed in 'Cracking the Code-...'
