Food For Thought
A collection of comments and
observations concerning various current events.
DONALD TRUMP'S FAILURE to
pardon Julian Assange (and Chelsea Manning
and Edward Snowden and others who have been
targeted by the deep state for revealing its
crimes), and to instead have his executive
agencies target them for destruction, is
proof positive that Trump is, himself, a
part of that deep state. Certainly that
behavior demonstrates that Trump is as
willing as the worst of them to commit gross
injustices in order to keep Americans in the
dark about crimes committed against them
directly, and against others in our name and
with our resources.
In light of that fact, Trump
really was the Manchurian candidate
spoken of by some during the campaign in
2016. His presidency has murdered the notion
that the rule of law can be saved from the
"bipartisan" myth of the two-winged
major-party vulture by an "outsider" (which
he pretended to be). An assassin of hope, as
it were.
This assassination is a good thing-- maybe
the only good thing to come from Trump's
emergence. That hope was always forlorn. While Leviathan remains, swollen and full of
power, anyone taking high office in the
state will be as bad as anyone else who does
so, and it's important that everyone
understands this.
SPEAKING OF TRUMP, I can't do a
potpourri post like this one
without mentioning the "impeachment" farce,
in regard to which I can only ask, what did
the Democrats expect when they relied on
such a lame pair of offenses? That reliance
is the best evidence going for the two-wing
vulture, designed as it plainly is to serve
as nothing more than the appearance of
opposition.
The offenses are real offenses,
don't get me wrong. But they are selected
because they can be credibly dismissed by
Trump supporters as partisan straw-grasping,
while sparing from public attention the
TRULY
SERIOUS offenses of which Trump is guilty.
Those really serious offenses
MUST be shielded because Obama was just as
guilty, and every member of Congress in
office longer than just a few years has been
a co-conspirator in them, as well (or a
worthless, silent and shameful bump-on-a-log
as these crimes have been committed).

impeachment concerned offenses alleged in
the Mueller report).

SPEAKING OF JULIAN ASSANGE and
the abuses he is facing, I have a suggestion
for his legal team (which is slightly
fanciful due to the expected reaction of the
courts, but which would likely play well in
the court of public opinion, at least). Here
is the notion:
It is a positive defense to any
criminal accusation that the action charged
as a crime is not one if it was done out of
necessity. The revelation of systematic war
crimes and other related offenses by
state-operators who have themselves
concealed the crimes from public knowledge
by self-serving "classification" is an act
of self-defense and in the common defense
(both especially when viewed in light of the
enormous globe-spanning,
aggressively-violent US-Leviathan footprint,
and even more especially in light of that US
Leviathan's known predisposition to
unilateral assassination of inconvenient
persons, Americans and non-Americans alike).
Any act serving that defense interest is
therefore legal (and especially any
non-violent act).
Assange and his team, then,
have two challenges. In addition to debunking
the absurd argument that the United States
is not constrained by the First Amendment in
regard to him, Assange and his team need
to keep the conversation focused on what he
acted to reveal (such
as this, among much, much else). A
"legal due to necessity" argument-- both in
the press during the extradition litigation
period (which is now) and then in court as
well, should it come to that-- can make that
happen.
The "Iran will never get a nuke
on my watch" thing is just a
hobgoblin-flog pretext for abusive
behavior by the United States and Israel. It
is cheap propaganda intended to suppress
public disgust at that behavior by
mendaciously suggesting that Iran is a
potential threat to Americans, of a piece
with the WMD bs about Iraq and "mushroom
clouds over Manhattan".
The real interest of the
abusers is ending Iran's support of the
Assad regime in Syria and Hezbollah in
Lebanon (and to a lesser extent the
Palestinians imprisoned in Gaza and the West
Bank), each of which stands in the way of
Israeli ambitions to seize additional
territory or resources from its neighbors
(one of the most significant and
long-standing of which is
discussed and documented here). This is
why the demands by attack dogs like Mike
Pompeo
always include renunciation of Iran's right
to its own foreign policy as their real
substance, accompanied by window-dressing
calls for the abandonment of nuclear
ambitions that are well-known to not exist
in the first place (and false allegations of
Iranian support for "terrorists").

FINALLY, I'VE BEEN AMUSED by the efforts
of census-submission flacks to reassure
Americans that nothing they reveal in the
hugely intrusive questionnaires now arriving
in mailboxes around the country will be
abusively acquired by other government
agencies-- because that would be
illegal! Like, no government agency
would ever wiretap anyone without even
probable cause, much less a warrant, right?
I'm not saying that the census
data will be abused-- how would I know? But
I am seriously saying, "Come up with a
better argument, people! That one is
risible, and if it's really the best you've
got, it leads me to be more concerned about
the security of my information than if you
had just kept your mouths shut."

THIS VIDEO PROJECTS THE PROGRESS of a nuclear exchange between Russia and
the United States. It's frightening, as it should
be, as well as sobering and instructive. My only
criticisms are, first of all, that it fails to
account for the imbalance that will now be present
in any such exchange due to
the new Russian
hypersonic weapons.
Secondly, the video fails to account
for China's contribution to the exchange against the
US, which is a virtual certainty. China knows that
if Russia goes, and the US survives, it goes soon
after. So, that will not be allowed to happen.

An "unpublished" evasion by the
Ninth Circuit after an initial evasion by a
tax court judge prompts a worthy response.
AS I HAVE SAID MANY TIMES, when
bad guys slam the
castle
gates and hunker down in hope of outlasting
the good guys (which some will inevitably do
when knowledge of the truth is not yet
widespread, and they can therefore tell
themselves that they might get away with
it), the good guys simply have to pound on
those gates, over and over, in ever-growing
numbers and with ever-growing force. We have
one such hunker-down and one such pounding
in progress.
Accomplished and stalwart
warrior Brian Harriss (meet Brian
here,
here and
here) got an, "I can't hear
you" evasion by a tax court judge in
response to his petition over two completely
unsupported "deficiency" allegations. Then
he got another from the Ninth Circuit issued
as an "unpublished ruling" (read: "We can't
risk having to conform to this indefensible
piece of crap it in the future, so we're
designating it as non-precedential..."). Brian is
now shaming both devils with a powerful
petition to the Supreme Court.
BRIAN'S PETITION REFLECTS an
exceptional grasp of
CtC's revelations and the voluminous
supplemental scholarship I've published in

over the years. It also does a great job of
parsing out and holding up for easy viewing
the corrupt ploys, gimmicks and evasions

Will the Supremes have the
integrity to stand up and vindicate their
own well-settled jurisprudence in the face
of Leviathan's corrupt "workaround"?
Probably not.
The high court will likely take
the escape hatch offered by the Ninth, whose
"unpublished" ploy makes Brian and his wife
and children the only victims of the bogus
ruling. Allowing an injustice to be suffered
by only one American family for the sake of
avoiding a ruling which would upset a lot of
well-connected apple-carts is a no-brainer
for jurists who are themselves sporting some
pretty heavily-vested apple-carts.
But amicus filings
might help change that dynamic.
Everyone else should do all
that is possible to get legal professionals
and journalists to read Brian's petition. A
strong buzz is even better than a strong
amicus brief.
Btw, while I'm in a
"recommendations" mode, let me recommend
Antonin Scalia's excellent book
'Making Your Case'to the attention
of anyone queuing up to do an amicus brief
(and to anyone at all with an interest in
persuasive brief-writing). A good friend
gave me a copy years ago and I found it very

The Establishment Doesn't Fear Trump, And It Doesn't
Fear Bernie. It Fears You.

During the George W Bush
administration it was popular in conspiracy circles
to speculate that events might be orchestrated
which would allow the Bush family to complete a coup
against the US Constitution and hold on to power
indefinitely.
Such paranoia and suspicion
of government power in the wake of the extraordinary
post-9/11 advancements in Orwellian surveillance
programs and unprecedented military expansionism
were perfectly understandable, but predictions that
the younger Bush would not cede power at the end of
his second term proved incorrect. In today’s
hysterical Trump-centric political environment we
now see
mainstream voices in
mainstream outlets openly
advancing the same conspiratorial speculations
about the current administration, and those will
prove incorrect as well.
What these paranoid
presidential prognostications get wrong is not their
extreme suspicion of government, but their
assumption that America’s real power structures
require a certain president to be in place in order
to advance depraved totalitarian agendas. As anyone
paying attention knows, intense suspicion of the US
government is the only sane position that anyone can
possibly have; the error is in assuming that there
is no mechanism in place to ensure that the same
agendas carry forward from one presidential
administration to the next.

fact that Trump departed from the talking points
prepared for him by national security officials so
he could act "contrary to official US policy," which
is to "deter Russian adventurism." Glad to know even

In a sense, the conspiracy
theories about a Bush coup were actually correct:
the Bush administration didn’t truly end. All of its
imperialist, power-serving agendas remained in place
and were expanded under the apparent oversight of
the following administration. The same thing
happened after the Obama administration, and the
same thing–whether in 2021 or 2025–will happen after
the Trump administration. The disturbing fact of the
matter is that if you ignore election dates and just
look at the numbers and raw data of US government
behavior over the years, you can’t really tell who
is president or which political party is in power at
any given point in time.
JOHNSTONE NAILS IT. I hope everyone
adds for themselves the last paragraph Johnstone
unfortunately doesn't know to add, regarding the
application of
the CtC remedy as the singular means by which
the large-scale awakening of which she speaks can be
effectively (not to mention non-violently)
translated into action and success.
Here's a good tool to use in making that all
happen. Post, email, share, tweet,
whatever, with an encouraging
introduction for the little two-page doc.
Who isn't going to open and read a mere
two-page .pdf, if you introduce it as, for
instance, a must-read that will free the
recipient from financing the
military-industrial-congressional complex
(and instead let them keep their hard-earned in
their own pockets, like you do)?
C'mon, people. This is your
chance to be a real-life superhero and make
things right for you and your kids.
I HAVE DONE MY BEST to lead this country
to liberty from the mis-applied income tax. I have labored
hard. I've shed a lot of sweat, a fair bit of blood
and more than a few tears. But I seem to be pretty poor
at that kind of work.
When I have asked all of you for what I
firmly believe is a necessary resource to move the ball
downfield and give all of us the best chance at justice
and an end to the assault on the rule of law-- simple
testimonial videos requiring nothing from any of you
but the phone in your pocket and three minutes of speaking
from the heart-- I have had only a handful of people
answer my call.
I CAN'T KEEP GOING THIS WAY. I have to
be able to turn my attention away from writing new persuasive
or skepticism-addressing articles week after week, and
toward research, analysis and educational presentations
that will benefit everyone already in this community.
I need time to do some suing, and to bring together
the resources and talent toward that end.
As said, it is my firm belief that your

I HATE TO PLAY IT THIS WAY. But I want

I'll tell you a story from when I was coaching
my kids in soccer. Both of my kids at a certain age
in their careers had run into a wall common to all but
the very exceptional. They had gotten to be pretty good,
and they wanted to enjoy the benefits of their hard
work. But the arrival of this interest coincided with
a new self-consciousness which made them reluctant to
risk failing and looking foolish. So, they were hanging
back from seizing the main chance when it appeared,
and driving for the goal.
My solution was to post on the wall of
our dining room a couple of simple points about self-discipline,
the chief of which is this: You can't score a goal if
you don't take a shot.
That's how it is here, too. If you don't
stand up, you are laying down, and you'll never score
that goal.
Here is what my kids live by now, in their
own version of that lesson. I hear it from them all
the time as they excel (accompanied by the sound of
a father's breast swelling with pride): Go hard,
or go home.
You, too. Go hard, or go home.
Send those videos.
Do I ask for a lot? I want your victories
to post, your financial support, your efforts at spreading
the word, and your beautiful faces and inspiring words,
too. It IS a lot.
But it's not too much. I'll let Thomas Paine explain:

What does it for you?
Is it simply because no moral and upstanding
person has any choice when it comes to telling the truth
over his or her signature, whether on tax forms or anywhere
else?
Is it recognition of the critical importance
of the rule of law, and the knowledge that if everybody
leaves its caretaking to someone else, it will soon
be lost to us completely?
Is it the money?
Maybe it's just simple respect for your
own rights as a human being, who is not and cannot be
not involuntarily subordinated to others?
Maybe it's just simple respect for your
general civic responsibility to be the grown-up and
enforce frugality and restraint on a big, powerful creature
of our own devising which otherwise is like a badly-raised
teenage boy given whiskey and car keys and let loose
on the road to wreak havoc?
Or is it, perhaps, a more acute anxiety
that if our bonfire of a state isn't damped, and quickly,
it'll soon burn down the house around us all?
What IS it that firms up your jaw and stiffens
your resolve?
It's time to take off the bushel and
share your light!
I would like you to think about what it
is that motivates you for a few moments (or all day,
if you like), and then send me your thoughts. I want
to put YOUR reasons to work inspiring folks who don't
yet understand what this is all about.
In this day and age, the most effective
way for you to share your thinking for the benefit of
others is to video-record yourself talking about how
you feel, and explaining what inspires and motivates
YOU.
All you need is a webcam or cell-phone
equipped with a camera. If you don't have, or know how
to use, one of these, have a friend help. (And if
you use a cell-phone, please have the orientation
horizontal, not vertical-- that is, so that the
screen of the phone on which you are watching
yourself while taping looks like a TV or movie
screen.)
If needed, write a little script for yourself.
Better, though, to just speak extemporaneously, after
spending a little time sorting out your thoughts and
getting down into your heart. Perhaps make it a video
of someone in your family, or a close friend, interviewing
you.
Dress "business casual". Be well-groomed.
Keep yourself to no more than 2 or 3 minutes,
and keep in mind that the purpose is
not to educate,
but to INSPIRE, ENCOURAGE and ENERGIZE. Your video will
be one of many to be shared. If you need to go
longer to really say your piece, go for it (but long
or short I may edit if something strikes me as
wandering or off-key or unacceptable).
You needn't feel any obligation to be profound,
and you shouldn't try to explain anything about the
law, other than to say that you have read it and you
know it's on your side. You just need to be sincere,
and uplifting. Your object is to make your audience
want to have what you have, and to be where you are
in your heart.
Don't talk to ME, or to others in the
CtC-educated community. Make remarks that are suited
to the NON-CtC-educated community, and at the same
time, be mindful that you're speaking to an
audience that doesn't yet know ANYTHING about the subject,
and whose first reaction is, "This must be illegal;
this must be dangerous; this is too good to be true."
You want to pull that audience right past such things,
and straight to a focus on truth, morality, and our
American heritage of liberty and the rule of law.
Remember: INSPIRE, ENCOURAGE, ENERGIZE.
Speak about rights. Speak about morality,
and the obligation of a grown-up and responsible person
to speak the truth and to enforce the Constitution.
Speak about everyone's duty
to give to God what is God's, always, and to Caesar
only what is really Caesar's. Speak of your obligation
to respect yourself, and to look out for the current
and future well-being of your children and your fellow
citizens. Speak of
CtC, and what its information has done for your
understanding and resolve. Show the book.
If you have had victories, describe them.
Better still, show them, if possible.
Be clear about just what you accomplished:
EVERYTHING back-- Social Security, Medicare and all;
a "notice of deficiency" closing notice; an on-paper
agreement or acknowledgment that your earnings weren't
subject to the tax and everything withheld or paid-in
was an "overpayment"; a transcript showing all $0s;
or whatever happened.
When you speak of state victories, name
the state. If you had to overcome balkiness from a tax
agency before winning any victory, describe that, too!
If you're in a battle now, speak of your
resolve to uphold the law, come what may. If you haven't
yet begun to act, speak of your decision to do so, and
your plans.
Remember, your purpose is to INSPIRE, ENCOURAGE
and ENERGIZE.
If you're dealing with ongoing balkiness,
describe that, too, if you wish-- but be sure to explain
why you're not discouraged, and why you are not standing
down, not slinking back into the barn, and not choosing
to endorse the lies.
Identify yourself. Anonymity is for criminals and self-doubters, not
CtC
warriors. Naming yourself is a requirement, and your
name will appear as a subtitle on the video when I
prepare it for posting, in any event.
Mention what you do for a living, whether
you're a doctor, homemaker, lawyer, trucker, IT guy
or gal, or a retiree or student. Help people understand
that the company of grown-up activist Americans they
are being invited to join cuts across all demographics
and all interests-- with the common denominator being
respect for the law and love of the principles on which
this great country was founded.
This is your chance to get a LOT accomplished.
We've all had frustrating occasions of
trying to explain all this to a friend, neighbor, family
member or co-worker, only to pile up against the wall
of a mind not yet ready to listen and learn. Here is
your chance to address a self-selected audience of folks
who have themselves decided that it's time for them
to begin paying attention, and have clicked on your
testimonial for exactly that reason.
Further, think about this: You want judges,
bureaucrats, CPAs, lawyers, the HR people where you
work, your pastors, your neighbors and everyone else
to acknowledge the truth about the tax openly and straightforwardly.
How and why would these folks do this if YOU won't?
You want these folks to learn the truth.
Why would they even recognize that there is a truth
to be learned if you won't attest to having learned
it yourself? You've got to stand up, face forward and
chin up and tell these folks that you have studied and
checked and verified and seen the evidence and seen
the government evasions and you know that the tax is
not the capitation that the beneficiary government wants
everyone to think it is but a benign, strictly limited
thing, and that they need to study and learn that, too.
Again, if you have victories to show, that's
nice, and powerful, too. But you don't have to have
victories to display in order to declare your knowledge
of what the law says. I've never flown around the world,
but I've seen the evidence and considered the arguments,
and I'm not hesitant to declare it a sphere...
Even those of you who haven't yet studied
CtC have surely read
this short document, and have verified everything
in it for yourself. You should therefore be declaring
its veracity and its message, loud and proud. Again,
if you won't say it, how can you hope that others will
ever even bother to look at the facts?
Be the change you want to see in the world,
or there won't be any change.

BTW: An encouraging and inspiring
video will earn you access to the restricted pages
on losthorizons.com and membership in the National
Forum if you have also sent me a recent educated
federal filing and IRS response (or relevant
"return" or "account" transcript). I will be the
judge of whether your submissions qualify
for access, but if you do your best you should do
fine.
Remember, the restoration of institutional
respect for individual rights and the rule of law depends
on enough individuals insisting upon it. Do your part
to let those starting to rub the sleep from their eyes

Getting Free Of The "Income" Tax Scheme Is As Easy As
Falling Off A Bike
To get an idea of how today's "income" tax scheme works,
try this little exercise:
Think of the federal government as a guy named Bob,
who lives down the street from you in a town that is
really big on bicycles. Bikes get used for commuting,
deliveries, shopping, etc.. In fact, other than walking,
bicycles are the exclusive form of transportation in
your town.
Your neighbor Bob has a by-the-mile bicycle-renting
business-- "Bob's Bicycles". Bob's Bicycles is far and
away the biggest business in town.
Part of Bob’s success is because he does a lot of contract
business. However, Bob doesn't just get paid by riders
who have signed an agreement with him, or even just
those using Bob's bikes. Bob gets something every time
anybody in town does any riding at all, through an odd
combination of circumstances that took many years to
come together.
Here's how it happened...
Bob's Bicycles was launched long ago by the great grandfather
of the present Bob (Bob IV). Great Grandpa Bob started
out not only with a main location for his contract business--
he also had the bright idea of setting up spots around
town where he parked some of his bikes for use by the
more occasional rider, on an "honor system". Anyone
could take and use one of these bikes, but they were
expected to keep track of their mileage, and send Bob
a "1040 Mileage Ridden/Rent Due Form" (and the appropriate
rent), periodically. The initial design of the form
was like this:
I, ______________,
rode a Bob's Bicycle a total of _____ miles
this year.
At Bob's rental
rate of $.15 per mile, I owe Bob $______
I said that Great Grandpa Bob planned to deal with these
occasional riders on the "honor system", and that's
true. But he liked his money, too, and didn't want to
miss anything that was due him. So, after setting up
the "self-serve" locations, Great Grandpa Bob went around
handing out "W-2, 1099 or K-1 Rider Reporting Forms"
to every other business in town. The forms-- accompanied
by notices that if Bob didn't get his rent from someone
riding a bicycle in connection with any business, he
would sue the company involved-- said:

If you are having an argument
with the IRS or any other tax agency,
You are NOT being presumed to have made “corporate
profit”.
You are NOT being alleged to have received “foreign
income”.
You are NOT entangled in an invisible “adhesion
contract”.
You are NOT being obligated by a law whose subject
is never identified.
You are being targeted because REAL EVIDENCE exists
that YOU PERSONALLY HAD “INCOME” to which the revenue laws apply--
even though that evidence is almost certainly incorrect,
and CAN be corrected.

Doing A Little High-Payoff Math

I know that this can mean the investment of a lot of time, attention
and effort, but although some may imagine otherwise, I don't write
as much as I do because I can't think of any other way to spend
my time...
Furthermore, when you encounter a hyperlink within, or associated
with, the text you are reading, follow it!
It is pretty common these days for web-based material to be littered
with hyperlinks. Sometimes the purpose is to provide definitions
or examples, in order to ensure that folks reading the original
material aren't presented with a word or reference which they don't
understand. Sometimes the links lead to illustrations pertinent
to the original text.
It is common-- and perfectly understandable-- for folks who are
confident that they are familiar with language or references within
the main text they are reading to get in the habit of skipping over
included links. I do it all the time, myself!
However, I very rarely include links for definitional or explanatory
purposes; and when I DO make a link out of text in one page it is
generally to another self-contained page, rather than merely illustrative
material. These other pages contain material the clear understanding
of which I deem highly important for the proper and complete understanding
of the original page. (Links to
CtC, the
Victories pages,
CtC Warriors and so on are obvious exceptions to this general
rule. On the other hand, a link to the victory
Highlights or 'Every
Which Way But Loose' pages, which might seem like such exceptions,
are not. The special selection of victories on those pages, and
the filed docs and tax-agency correspondences included therewith,
themselves constitute highly instructive material which merits careful
attention. Thus care needs to be taken in all cases.)
Please make a habit of clicking on all provided links and at least
looking briefly to ensure that the linked page is one with which
you are completely familiar from another study session.
Finally, please keep in mind that, annoying though it may seem at
first blush (but not, I trust, upon reflection), I constantly tweak
material already posted. Obviously this doesn't mean that every
page is in flux at all times, but it does mean that if you are directed
to a page that IS familiar, it's worthwhile to read it through again
if it's been a while since your last having done so.
February 3- In 1690, the Massachusetts colonial government
issues the American continent's first paper "money". In 1809, the Illinois
Territory is formed. In 1913, the 16th Amendment-- the most deliberately
misrepresented Constitutional amendment of all, bar none-- is declared
ratified. All the amendment did was overrule the limited effect of the Pollock
v. Farmer's Loan & Trust ruling by the Supreme Court in 1895, which had
prevented dividends and rent connected with the exercise of federal privilege
from being subject to the tax like other "income" had been for decades based on
a view the court took of their relationship of those particular gains to the

1940, Pierre Laval is installed as head of government in Vichy, France, by the
occupying Nazis. In 1959, the music dies in Iowa. In 1966, the unmanned Soviet
Luna 9 spacecraft successfully lands on the Moon. In 1969, Yasser Arafat is
appointed head of the PLO by the Palestinian National Congress. In 1971, Frank
Serpico is shot, but survives to testify about the drug-war-fueled corruption of
fellow New York City police officers.

Confederation. In 1918, Stephen W. Thompson shoots down a German plane in a
dogfight-- the first aerial victory for the U.S. military. In 1919, United
Artists is formed by Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, Douglas Fairbanks, and D.
W. Griffith. In 1958, the U.S. loses a hydrogen bomb (still unrecovered) off
the coast of Savannah, Georgia. In 1968, the Battle of Khe Sanh begins. In
1971, Apollo 14 lands on the Moon. In 1988,
CIA-asset-turned-Panamanian-strongman Manuel Noriega is indicted on "drug
smuggling" and "money laundering" charges.

February 6- In 1782, South Carolina
bans paper money, after a thorough lesson in its inherent and unavoidable
evils. In 1788, Massachusetts becomes the sixth of the several states to ratify
the United States Constitution and authorize the new version of the federal
government, under the charter of which the federal government is given no
authority to emit bills of credit or other paper "money", but may only coin
money-- a limited authority in harmony with the identical prescription that the
several states may not emit bills of credit, nor make any thing but gold or
silver a tender in payment of debts. In 1815, New Jersey grants the first
American railroad charter (for a line between New Brunswick and Trenton). In
1959, the first patent is issued for an integrated circuit; and a Titan ICBM is
successfully test-fired for the first time. In 1989, the "Roundtable" talks
begin in Poland, marking the beginning of the end of communist domination of
Eastern Europe.

February 7- In 1795, the Eleventh
Amendment to the United States Constitution is ratified. In 1904, a fire breaks
out in Baltimore, Maryland which will burn for 30 hours and destroy more than
1,500 buildings. The city rebuilds and moves on without the assistance of
FEMA. Mayor Robert Lane declares, "To suppose that the spirit of our people
will not rise to the occasion is to suppose that our people are not genuine
Americans. We shall make the fire of 1904 a landmark not of decline but of
progress." He refused all offers of assistance, stating, "As head of this
municipality, I cannot help but feel gratified by the sympathy and the offers of
practical assistance which have been tendered to us. To them I have in general
terms replied, 'Baltimore will take care of its own, thank you.'". In 1962, the
United States bans all imports from, and exports to, Cuba. In 1964, the Beatles
arrive in America. In 1990, the Central Committee of the Soviet Communist Party
agrees to relinquish its monopoly on power in the USSR. In 1991, the IRA fires
mortar rounds at Britain's Prime Ministerial offices at 10 Downing Street,
London. In 1992, the European Union is created with the signing of the
Maastricht Treaty.
February 8- In 1692, a doctor in Salem
Village, Massachusetts suggests that two daughters of the village minister may
be suffering from bewitchment. In 1865, Delaware votes to reject the Thirteenth
Amendment and continue the practice of slavery. In 1910, the Boy Scouts of
America is incorporated. In 1922, the first radio is installed in the White
House by President Warren Harding. In 1978, United States Senate proceedings
are broadcast on radio for the first time. In 1993, General Motors (then a
private company) sues NBC over a "Dateline" episode, alleging that the show's
producers rigged GM vehicles to catch fire after crashes. NBC settles the next
day.
